Wk 3 – Artist Interview

I had the fortune of speaking to Tricia Rangel, the artist who created “A New Foundation.” Essentially, there were different bricks and blocks of dirt made from the dirt from San Joaquin Valley, each with a different consistency.

Reading the summary of the art pieces, I found it interesting that these blocks of dirt represent “failure, strength, vulnerability, and weakness.” After speaking with her, she explains that the softer consistencies represent the less intact traits such as failure and weakness, while the more solid and compacted blocks represent strength.

At the end of the day, she destroys all the art pieces since she can’t take them home. Rangel claims she is pretty unattached to that collection of art pieces specifically because she can easily recreate them, using plywood and 2×4’s to mold the dirt.
