Wk 11 – Artist Interview – Yu Ji

Yu Ji is an art student in CSULB. Her display was a series of of portraits drawn from an observation of a live model. Her portraits evolve and become more complex and intricate depending on what she puts into it (ex. her personal experiences, current interest music or literature, or thoughts and sensations).

She used only charcoal chalk and pastel on paper. The subjects in the portraits are in black and white and there would be some tastefully added color in the background. She hopes to engage the viewer to observe the art more slowly, focusing on the details and possibly see some kind of story behind it.

Overall, the portraits are very unique and caught my attention immediately. What I noticed first was how the people illustrated are very normal/average and were in a very mundane setting. It showed me that art can be found and created in any setting with any subject.
